City Street Department: Keeping Our Roads Safe & Functional
The City’s Street Department plays a crucial role in maintaining and improving the infrastructure that keeps our community connected. Our team is responsible for over 110 lane miles of hard surface and rock streets. We ensure that roads, sidewalks, and drainage systems remain safe, reliable, and efficient for residents, businesses, and visitors.
Any concerns about a street-related issues can be reported thru the Fix It FC reporting module or be calling City Hall at 402.245.2851.
Our Responsibilities
✅ Street Maintenance & Repair
We oversee the upkeep of city streets, including pothole repairs, asphalt patching, crack sealing, and resurfacing projects to extend the life of roadways.
✅ Snow & Ice Removal
During winter months, our crews work around the clock to plow streets, apply salt and sand, and ensure safe travel conditions. Our priority routes focus on emergency services, school zones, and high-traffic areas before moving into residential neighborhoods. You can review the complete Snow & Ice Control Plan here.
✅ Stormwater Drainage & Flood Control
Proper drainage is essential to prevent flooding and road damage. We maintain storm drains, culverts, and ditches to keep water flowing efficiently and minimize erosion.
✅ Street Sweeping & Debris Removal
Regular street sweeping improves cleanliness, enhances air quality, and prevents debris from entering stormwater systems. We also remove fallen trees and debris after storms to keep roadways clear.
✅ Traffic Signs & Signals
From stop signs to traffic lights, we install, maintain, and replace critical traffic control devices to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
✅ Sidewalk & Curb Maintenance
Safe sidewalks are vital for pedestrians. We repair and replace damaged sidewalks and curbs as part of ongoing improvement projects.
✅ Alley & Gravel Road Maintenance
For areas with gravel roads and alleys, we grade and apply fresh gravel as needed to maintain safe and accessible travel routes.
✅ Street Planning & Infrastructure Development
Our department plays a key role in long-term street planning, ensuring that road improvements align with the city’s growth and transportation needs. Each year, we annually develop and adopt a One & Six Year Street Improvement Plan, outlining priority road projects, maintenance schedules, and infrastructure upgrades to enhance mobility and safety for our residents.
Community Impact
The Street Department is committed to providing safe and efficient transportation routes that support economic development, emergency services, and everyday life in our city. Whether responding to severe weather events, repairing road damage, or planning long-term infrastructure improvements, our team works tirelessly to serve the community.
