Crankshaft repair for Engine 5 at the Falls City Power Plant is underway. Engine 5 is a Fairbanks-Morse, duel fuel, 2800 horsepower, 8 cylinder engine installed in 1951. It is capable of generating 1.8 megawatts of electricity which is about 12% of the watts needed to power the entire town. The engine is utilized under emergency operation only limited to 100 hours/year of operation. In 2021, the engine had a catastrophic failure causing warping of the 15-ton crankshaft which required repair. Fire Hydrant Refurbishing to Recommence

In collaboration with the Falls City Volunteer Fire Department, the refurbishing of fire hydrants project will recommence on March 13, 2023. A total of 211 hydrants will be surface prepped and painted. The work will start on East 17th street and continue north to 35th street. We ask that vehicles are not parked near the hydrants to allow access for equipment. If possible, remove any tall grasses, flowers or weeds around the hydrants to aid in the process. Ordinance 2022-112 requiring registration of both residential and commercial vacant/abandoned properties was adopted by the City of Falls City on December 5th, 2022. The ordinance places a duty on the owner of vacant/abandoned properties to register the property with the city. Vacant/abandoned properties have been neglected by their owners, leaving it up to the city to keep them from becoming crime magnets, fire hazards, or dumping grounds and overwhelming city resources.
Property owners can register a vacant property by submitting a completed Vacant Property Registration Form to City Hall. There is no fee for initial registration. Property owners can find additional information...
